Niue’s strongest, healthiest men left the tiny nation to fight in far-off Europe.

Illness claimed their lives but their descendants can now claim honours.

The government has recognised three World War I Niuean soldiers who trained at Devonport’s Narrow Neck Beach.

Privates Alotau, Mitipauni and Muimatagi survived the war but succumbed to illness contracted overseas when they returned home.

In 2014, Mayor Len Brown and councillor Sandra Coney unveiled Narrow Neck Beach's addition to Auckland's First World War Heritage Trail.

In 2014, Mayor Len Brown and councillor Sandra Coney unveiled Narrow Neck Beach’s addition to Auckland’s First World War Heritage Trail.

The soldiers will be added to the New Zealand Roll of Honour and Commonwealth War Graves Commission records.
